How Automated Water & Sand Management Powers More Efficient Energy Operations

Uusi toimintakutsu

Automated water and sand management uses remote, real-time control to run the pumping, blending, treatment, and sand separation behind hydraulic fracturing. For oil and gas operators, that can mean lower fuel use, a more consistent frac fluid, better sand recovery, and fewer field personnel in harm’s way.

This Energy Awareness Month, it is worth looking at where efficiency starts: the wellsite. In oil and gas, a central goal is maximizing efficiency to manage costs, minimize risk, and reduce nonproductive time, and water management is “the newest frontier of automation.”

What Is TETRA BlueLinx?

The TETRA BlueLinx automated control system provides remote monitoring and control of produced water transfer, storage, treatment and recycling, blending and distribution, and sand management. Its cloud-based dashboard connects to field equipment by WiFi, cellular, or satellite link and shows pressures, fluid composition, water conductivity, storage levels, and equipment status throughout the operation.

How Does Automation Make Energy Operations More Efficient?

  • Reduced fuel use. Automated pumping controls pressure and flowrate in real time, and “optimized pump operation promotes fuel consumption reduction.”
  • A more consistent frac fluid. Automated blending combines flowback, produced, brackish, and fresh water into a single homogeneous fluid, and the TETRA SWAT system doses chemicals continuously so water is treated to the target specification.
  • Better sand recovery. TETRA SandStorm technology can increase sand recovery by as much as 50% over competing desanders, with reported efficiencies of 97–100%, which can help bring wells to full production faster.
  • Safer crews. Manual sand flushing can mean opening and closing valves as often as every five minutes against 2,000 to 6,000 psi. Automation can eliminate many of those manual tasks and help reduce exposure to high-risk situations.

Why Does Sand Management Matter?

Sand that returns with hydrocarbons can plug and erode flowlines and production equipment, potentially costing the industry millions of dollars in repairs or losses. In one Appalachian project, TETRA SandStorm technology recovered 99.4% of the sand at flowrates peaking at 42 MMCFD (million cubic feet per day). For multi-well pads, the TETRA multi-source unit handles up to six wells at the same time.

Efficient Energy Starts at the Wellsite

TETRA automated the key processes in its water and sand management solutions, designed to deliver greater accuracy, efficiency, and safety while helping enable cost savings. This Energy Awareness Month, that is the takeaway: more efficient energy operations can begin with smarter water and sand management.
